Mitacs operates on a system of "Internship Units," where one unit equals 12 to 24 weeks of research.

The Baseline Award: Researchers receive a direct grant of $6,000 CAD per unit.

Extended Stay: If the project requires more time, researchers can apply for up to two units (24 to 48 weeks), doubling the funding to $12,000 CAD.

What it Covers: Funds are deposited directly to support round-trip international travel, accommodation in Canada, a personal living stipend, and direct research-related expenses.

Administrative Support: Mitacs actively assists selected candidates with the Canadian visa and work permit application processes.

📋 Eligibility Criteria for International Applicants

To qualify for the inbound international pathway, applicants must meet specific enrollment requirements:

Current Student Status: Must be enrolled as a full-time student or postdoctoral fellow at an eligible international institution outside of Canada.

Citizenship Rule: Applicants cannot undertake this research in a country where they hold citizenship. Age Limit: Must be a legal adult (18 years or older).

Field of Study: All academic disciplines are accepted, though STEM, Artificial Intelligence, and Computer Science proposals experience exceptionally high success rates.
