Bayer Foundation Scientific Fellowships 2026 Fully Funded Research in Germany

Are you a Master’s or PhD student in Ethiopia or Africa looking to take your research to the global stage? Today, February 18, 2026, marks the official opening of the Bayer Foundation Scientific Fellowships.

This program is designed for "boundary-breakers"—students who want to conduct international research projects or internships at top German institutions. If you are in the fields of Agriculture, Biology, Medicine, or Data Science, this is your golden ticket to Europe.

💎 Why This is a "Hidden Gem" for African Students

Most students only apply for full Master's degrees. The Bayer Fellowship is unique because:

🧪 Project-Based: It funds a specific research stay or internship (up to 6 months).

📊 High Demand for Data Science: There is a specific track for Data Science in Drug Discovery—perfect for the growing tech talent in Ethiopia!

🌿 Agricultural Focus: Ethiopia’s agricultural backbone makes our students prime candidates for the "Agricultural Science" fellowship.

🚪 Lower Competition: Because it requires a "Host Supervisor" in Germany, many students are too lazy to apply. If you follow our steps below, you will have a huge advantage.

💰 What the Fellowship Covers (Colorful Benefits)

The Bayer Foundation provides substantial financial support so you can focus entirely on your scientific breakthrough:

💶 Direct Funding: Up to €10,000 to cover your travel, visa, and living costs in Germany.

🏢 Institutional Access: Conduct your research in world-class German labs.

🤝 Networking: Join a global community of "Bayer Fellows" and Nobel Laureate networks.

🛠️ Flexibility: Use the funds for internships, lab work, or specialized training programs.

📋 Specialized Fellowship Categories

You don't just apply to one "generic" pool. You pick the track that fits your passion:

💊 Drug Discovery Sciences: For students in Pharmacy, Chemistry, or Data Science (AI in healthcare).

🌽 Agricultural Science: For those focusing on sustainable farming, crop protection, and food security.

🩺 Medical Sciences: Open to human and veterinary medicine students, as well as public health researchers.

🌡️ Climate & Health: (New for 2026!) For research at the intersection of environmental change and human health.

✅ Eligibility Checklist

Before you start the application, make sure you tick these boxes:

🎓 Academic Level: You must be currently enrolled in a Master’s or PhD program (Medical students are also eligible).

🌍 Location: You must be studying outside of Germany (perfect for all African residents).

🇩🇪 Destination: Your project/internship must take place at a research institution in Germany.

🗣️ Language: Proficiency in English or German (no strict IELTS/TOEFL requirement if your host supervisor approves your level).

🚀 Step-by-Step: How to Secure the Fellowship

This is where most students fail, but where you will succeed:

You need a professor or a lab in Germany to say "Yes, you can come work with us."

Tip for Ethiopians: Search for German universities (like T.U. Munich or University of Hohenheim) that have existing partnerships with Addis Ababa University or your local college. Email them with a copy of your CV and a brief research idea!

Outline what you want to achieve in Germany in 2–6 months. Be specific. How will this help your career and your home country?

You will need a letter from your current professor in Africa and one from your future host in Germany.

Starting TODAY, visit the Bayer Foundation Portal and upload your documents.
